This NBA season has been amazing. Even though there was so much talk about how it’s getting boring and this and that this year has been so exciting with so many narratives. With the year about to end the awards debates are heating up and my favorite one has been the case for most improved player. In my eyes, it’s really a two man race between the Detroit Pistons’ Cade Cunningham and the Atlanta Hawks’ Dyson Daniels. Now, I know this is a political substack, but bear with me as I lay out my cases for these two players and how it relates to getting involved with politics.
Last year the Detroit Pistons were generationally bad at basketball and this is not an exaggeration. They literally lost the most games in a row with 28 straight loses. They finished the year in the bottom 7 teams in the league and everyone was wondering what was next. Well, Cade Cunningham stepped up and has taken this team from historically bad to historically good. Winning the most games in a row in franchise history this season, Cade has led his team to become a force in the East. Averaging x y z and being an all star Cade has stepped up and taken charge of a situation that seemed abysmal. His improvements in his game have improved the team and the sport of basketball as a whole.
On the other hand is Dyson Daniels, a stand out 22 yr old defensive star. With the most steals in a season since Michael Jordan and leading the leagues in steals/blocks/deflections, the Great Barrier Thief (a great nickname that plays into his Australian heritage) has made a name for himself in the Hawks uniform. Just last year, Daniels was on the New Orleans Pelicans not getting any minutes and rehabbing an injury. This year, he’s become a defensive player of the year candidate and in the running for MIP. Last year the Hawks were one of the worst defensive teams and this year they’ve elevated all because of Dyson. Just like Cade, he stepped up and grew into his role to make an impact.
I would love either of them to win the award but the big takeaway here is that they stepped up when needed to make an impact. In the same way, we want YOU to do the same in campaigns across the country. Look, here at SAATH our goal is to empower the electorate and to do that we need you. Across the country we have internships and fellowships with candidates running in races that could decide the future of the state legislature. Local politics is how we make national change. Fill out this form to join a campaign and fill this one to join us at SAATH. Let’s all step into the role the time demands of us and fight for an equal country.
